Riding through a glacial valley filled with wildflowers in early August

What it is:

There are many types of dude ranches and pack trips, but this is something unique. Our route will take you across the sweeping plains the West is known for, through valleys carved by glaciers, up ridges dense with pine trees, across tumbling turquoise rivers, to breathtaking mountain bowls and alpine lakes. This trip includes three nights in rooms at our historic ranch, one night at our sister ranch, and two nights camping in canvas wall tents or beneath the stars in the Crazy Mountains of Montana. During the week, you will have the chance to build partnership with our fantastic, sure-footed, powerful horses, ride at all paces/gaits, swim in crystalline waters, fish for trout, hike through rock slides, cook over campfires, watch the sun set in a cacophony of colors over mountain peaks, and stargaze in a land untouched by human light pollution but rich with the light of the Milky Way.

Who it’s for:

Because we are offering you the best rides we can on the hardiest horses we have, we ask that you only inquire about this experience if you are a truly capable rider. These routes are NOT suitable to beginners, people with fitness concerns, or anyone who is afraid of a healthy dose of adventure. If you are in search of a calmer riding holiday, never fear! We offer those too! This package, though, is specifically tailored to experienced horse people seeking an authentic riding excursion in the wilds of Montana. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, but fun is 100% guaranteed! If you come with an appetite for adventure, we promise you will leave fuller than you could ever have imagined.

Itinerary:

*All days will include hearty, delicious breakfasts and dinners at the ranch or campsite. We will stop for lunch at beautiful locations on the trail each day.

  • Sunday: Arrive at the ranch! Transportation is available from the Bozeman airport. We do one van pickup at 3:00 on Sunday afternoons. Spaces in the van are reserved on a first come, first serve basis, so please be sure to let us know ASAP if you will want transportation. Guests may also rent a car and drive themselves to Sweet Grass. You may check in at the ranch any time after 4 p.m. Dinner on Sunday night is at 7:00 p.m.
  • Monday: We will have a safety / riding orientation for all guests on Monday morning, following breakfast. After the orientation, we will get riders acquainted with their horse and adjust all tack. Monday we will ride approximately 24 miles through glacial moraines, across wide open fields, up into a saddle in the mountains. We start the week with a big ride, to ensure that guests are comfortable with the riding before we begin the camping portions of the week. We will return to the ranch for dinner and spend the night there.
  • Tuesday: We will eat breakfast at the ranch, and then set out on our ride. This ride will be approximately 23 miles and will take us up a treed ridge, through a series of valleys and creek crossings, across long plains, to an old homestead at the foothills of the mountains. We will spend Tuesday night at our sister ranch, The Bar B. There are a variety of accommodation options at The Bar B, ranging from log lean-tos to a bunkhouse to a canvas tent. Weather permitting, we will have a campfire and music at the Bar B.
  • Wednesday: We will ride back from the Bar B to Sweet Grass, along a different route than the day before. This day will be about 11 miles of riding. We will return to the ranch in the afternoon so that guests may enjoy some downtime before joining the rest of the guests at the ranch for a peaceful 1 mile dinner ride.
  • Thursday: We will begin our big trek into the mountains! We will ride approximately 18 miles this day across rugged terrain, including a rock slide where guests must dismount and lead their horses. We will gain nearly 3,000 feet in elevation this day on our way to an alpine lake. We will camp at a clearing on the South Fork of the Sweet Grass Creek and guests will have the option to sleep in a canvas tent or beneath the stars. Food will be prepared on camp stoves or over a campfire. The area is filled with wildflowers and perfect for an evening stroll or quick dip in cold water to treat sore muscles.
  • Friday: We will ride from one mountain campsite to another. This second campsite is on the shores of our privately owned alpine lake. This will be our shortest riding day, at about 6 miles, to allow guests time to explore and enjoy the staggering mountain landscape. This ride will be largely through the woods and across bubbling streams, though the trail will open several times into epic mountain bowls. At the second campsite, guests will have the opportunity to hike to further alpine lakes, fish, or swim (either on their own or with a horse). Our campsites will be lively, with food, drinks, playing cards, and truly unparalleled scenery.
  • Saturday: We will round out the week with one last, big ride! We will climb from the alpine lake campsite, up the mountain past more lakes, to a bowl in the mountain above the tree line. From this vantage point, guests will be able to see the whole valley laid out below them. We will then make our way down a steep, treed ridge and follow the Sweet Grass Creek from its genesis all the way back to the ranch. Guests will again need to lead their horses on foot through the rock slide. This ride will be approximately 17 miles. We will return to the ranch in time for our farewell steak dinner! Guests will stay in accommodations at the ranch on this last night and enjoy a parting party in our outdoor pavilion.
  • Sunday: We will have breakfast at the ranch and guests will check out by 10 a.m. You will head home rejuvenated in spirit, with memories to last a lifetime!
