About Sweet Grass

Sweet Grass Ranch is a family-owned and operated guest ranch tucked into the Crazy Mountains of Montana. Sweet Grass is our family’s home, and we are incredibly fortunate to steward the ranch and to share it with guests who become like family to us. A week at Sweet Grass is an opportunity for you to disconnect from the hustle of your daily life and immerse yourself in a world where things move a little slower, but every moment is full of meaning. Sweet Grass is the perfect trip for anyone – whether you are a solo traveler, a couple, a group of friends, or a family, we have something to offer everyone.

Our goal is to give each person who crosses our threshold the experience of a lifetime! We are a big ranch geographically, but we take a small number of guests at a time, resulting in a truly intimate week where we build lasting bonds between people, horses, and the breathtaking landscapes of the American West. Our family is with you every step of your vacation, from booking through checkout, and we work to fully customize your experience. From horseback riding across the plains to hiking in the mountains to fishing turquoise stream beds to campfire sing-a-longs beneath the star-strewn sky, we are here to make it all happen!

Sweet Grass Ranch was homesteaded in 1889 by the Brannin Family (for more information on our origins, check out our Ranch History page). In 1965, the ranch was bought by Bill and Shelly Carroccia. Shelly grew up in the Crazy Mountains on another guest ranch. Her family was among the founding members of the Dude Ranchers’ Association in 1926, so we are part of a 100-year legacy of horses and hospitality! Bill and Shelly are still at Sweet Grass to this day! They help run the ranch alongside their daughter, Page, her husband, Pat, their kids, Erin and Connor, and their nephew, Josh. We are biased, but we believe Sweet Grass is a truly magical place. We are excited to share that magic with you!
