Ride up the breath-taking Sweet Grass Canyon to a pristine alpine lake or tumbling mountain stream high in the Crazy Mountains, one of the most beautiful spots in Montana. Pitch camp amongst the wild flowers and snow-capped peaks and enjoy hearty meals cooked over a campfire. Explore the surrounding valleys and lakes on horseback during your stay at camp. Swim, fish or just sit back and appreciate the peaceful tranquility of the mountains.
All food and supplies are carried by a pack horse, accommodations are shared traditional canvas wall tents.
Pack trips are available throughout July and August, we like to keep group numbers between four and eight. You must be in good physical condition and be an intermediate or stronger rider to do these packtrips.
A Sample Pack Trip Itinerary
Day One – Arrive at Sweet Grass Ranch on Monday afternoon. We will fit you to a horse and saddle. You will eat dinner at the ranch and stay in our Yurt accommodation.
Day Two – After breakfast at Sweet Grass your wranglers will pack the packhorse and you will set out up canyon. This ride can take around five to six hours depending on the number of riders and destination.
Once you reach the camp location, we will set up camp, corral the horses, gather wood for a fire** and spend the rest of the afternoon and evening enjoying the beautiful scenery, settling in, fishing, hiking or relaxing, as you wish.
Day Three – You decide the schedule; you can take a half-day or all-day ride to one of the other lakes, ride into another of the Sweet Grass drainages, swim in the lake or explore the surrounding area on foot.
Day Four – After breakfast you will pack up camp and ride back to Sweet Grass Ranch (option to stay overnight at the ranch).
Tents, sleeping bags and all cooking equipment are provided. This is Montana and the weather can be unpredictable so in addition to the items listed here we recommend you bring warm clothes to sleep in.
