One of the main attractions for guests, often bringing them back year after year, is the opportunity to work with Rocco and Annie’s cattle from the cattle ranch. Since the cattle typically graze on Sweet Grass Ranch lands for a portion of the summer, Sweet Grass Ranch guests have the opportunity to learn first hand about the challenges and joys of caring for a herd of grass-fed, range cattle, monitoring their health and moving them to new grazing grounds as water and grass vitality dictates.

We may do some cattle work on any given week, and are sometimes checking fences, grass conditions, and putting out salt and minerals. On these working rides, guests are always invited to join in whenever they desire a taste of the cowboy life.  Please be aware that we do not work cattle every week, so if this is an important part of your vacation, you must verify cattle work with us in advance when booking.

For those looking for that working ranch experience of a cattle drive, there are certain weeks we are likely to move cattle. Here’s a chance to drive cattle from one ranch to another or over to different grazing lands. These dates may change slightly from year-to-year, so its best to check with us when planning your trip. Please be aware that the length and location of these cattle moves is usually 1 day during the week, returning to the ranch in the evening.  Occasionally, there might be two days during the week but that will vary depending on grass, weather, and cattle health.   However, the following tentative 2018 dates offer that cattle drive experience (PLEASE CONFIRM WHEN BOOKING):

  • June weeks (usually one day per week and the location may require trailering horses or a long ride to the cattle ranch, before moving cows)
  • The week of July 29-August 5 (2-3 day cattle drive, camping out)
  • August weeks (moving cattle higher into the mountain and checking on them, but not necessarily moving them each week)
  • August 26-September 9  hunting for cattle in the alpine area and moving them down to the cattle ranch over a multi-week span;

These cattle work days are usually one day a week, but the week of July 29-August 5, we do a 2 to 3 day drive, and camp out overnight at least one, and possibly two nights along the way.  Accommodations are in tents for the evenings on this cattle drive, with a shared bathroom facility.
