Booking Policies

Unlike many guest ranches, we have a 7 night stay with 6 full days of riding.  Rates are based on this 7 night stay. Sunday is our horses’ holiday. Rates include lodging, meals, riding, hiking, fishing, and all ranch activities, but do not include the State of Montana accommodations tax or the crew gratuity. Shorter stays with a minimum of four nights may be possible depending on availability (for example, if we have guests staying 10 days and a 4 day period is left in a week). We do not book short stays unless a vacancy is created by other guests staying longer than a week.  All stay of less than a week, when available,  must begin or end on a Sunday. The rate for a short stay is $325/person/night.

Our rates for adults vary depending on the accommodations. There are special rates for children, with a $300 per week charge for kids under 4 (non-riding rate), and reduced charges for kids age 12 and under. Please check on the “Rates” tab to see the current vacancies.

We offer discounts for groups of 10 or more and guests who are active duty military. All return guests receive a 5% discount off the current rates, and we have a non-rider rate of $1400/person/week.

Extras and Specials:

Sweet Grass Ranch is pleased to offer  a longer multi-day cattle drive with overnight camping (this will be the week of July 29-August 5 in 2018) in addition to other cattle work and occasional single day cattle drives, and  packtrips into the mountains–either single night or multi-day trips.  The longer multi-day packtrips can be booked independently of a regular stay at the guest ranch.  Please discuss availability and dates with us and see the Packtrip page.  Please be aware that cattle work depends on weather, grass and cattle health, so locations and length of cattle moves will vary depending on these concerns.

Single night overnight trips can also  be arranged for guests who are at the ranch for the week.  These trips may be to an alpine lake or to the Bar B, which is a small ranch facility between the cattle ranch and guest ranch.  It has incredible views, offers some riding opportunities on the cattle ranch, and has a wall tent, yurt, and a lean-to for lodging.  Overnights are at an additional cost.

Other specials include weekly half-day horsemanship clinics.  Please check either the “Horsemanship clinics” tab or “Specials” tab to read more about these clinics.

To check out the various opportunities to work with cattle, please see the “Cattle drive” tab.

Airports and Transportation:

Sweet Grass Ranch is equidistant from Bozeman and Billings, Montana. The ranch can meet flights into Gallatin Field in Bozeman or Logan International for $135 per person round-trip.  Please note this price is per person, not per vehicle.  We do not have a van, so our ability to transport guests is limited to about 4 people per vehicle and two to three vehicles.  Transportation will be provided on a first requested, first served basis.   If you do wish us to provide transport, we cannot meet flights after 4:00 p.m. or prior to 11:30 a.m., as the ranch is approximately 2 ½ hours each way and we may be transporting other guests, as well, so you may need to wait for transport after arrival or be dropped off early for departures.

Booking and Deposits:

Please give us a call or email to make reservations. Reservations are confirmed upon receipt of a 50% deposit, with the balance due on the day of your departure from the ranch. We accept personal check, money order, wired funds, VISA and MasterCard. A discount of 2% applies to non-credit card payments.
State of Montana accommodations tax: 7% on room portion of stay only.
Gratuities are not mandatory, but are appreciated at the customary rate of 12-18%.

Cancellation Policy:

If you must cancel your reservation and do so by April 1, then one-half of your deposit will be refunded (provided you paid the full deposit).   The other one-half deposit will be forfeited or you can chose our rollover option. Cancellations after April 1 are not refunded, the only option is to roll-over the deposit to the following year.   We will do a one-time roll over of the deposit to the following summer if you  let us know of the cancellation AT LEAST 6 WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED ARRIVAL.  This is the only way we have an opportunity to rebook an cancellation, so please be aware that if you cancel closer than 6 weeks to your arrival, you will forfeit both the rollover option and the deposit.  We recommend travel insurance to cover any cancellations. A number of companies offer travel insurance, so please feel free to contact any of them. Travel Guard is an associate member of the Dude Ranchers’ Association and can be contacted at Please ask about the Dude Ranch protection plan and reference Product Number 008572.
